About the Red Peony Academy of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy

———The Charming of Red Peony Art

The power of art, a quote attributed to Albert Einstein neatly summed up our most important challenge. We believe that an art appreciation association is not meant to impress scholars with the erudition of its authors, but to inspire in its learners a lifelong love of art. It has been our goal to share traditional Chinese painting, as well as calligraphy, yet enjoyable experience that educates by pleasure.

A second challenge we faced was to select, from the astonishing treasures of visual art produced over the centuries, several hundred images that could represent the sweep of our Eastern art heritage in a global context. It was a painful process.

In traditional Chinese painting circles Jack is a master of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, especially the Peony, which represents Beauty, Elegance and National Fragrance. He has a fresh approach to Chinese painting which is beautiful, pure and lively. His simple and natural tones combine the traditional Chinese painting spirit with the soul of modern times to form a unique freehand style of Chinese painting that is appreciated and valued by his fellow artists, students and society.

Jack has been awarded several top art awards including a National Golden Prize for Chinese Painting in 2012.

Painting & Calligraphy

Traditional Chinese Painting & Calligraphy is one of the most important cultural achievements of Chinese civilization. Painting in the traditional style is known today in Mandrin as ‘guó huà’, meaning 'national' or 'native painting'.It involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls.

Our Red Peony Academy is located in the library of Ningbo University Zone(Yinzhou Library) which has a pleasant ambience and rich and precious Chinese painting and calligraphy art literature resources. Jack can make the fullest use of these to guide you.

Every international student can start from learning how to paint the beautiful Peony, the Chinese National flower, which has been painted by traditional Chinese artists for centuries. The Peony is a symbol for the Chinese people that brings peace, happiness and best wishes to the whole world with Her National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance. This colourful glorious flower symbolizes everything that is auspicious, propitious, flourishing, happy, wealthy and elegant.
